American researchers have discovered that most people drink coffee the wrong way, British "The Independent" newspaper says.

According to scientists from Rush University in Chicago, to avoid sleep for a long time one needs to drink a small cup of coffee every hour.

However, doctors, rescuers and military people who have to work night or 24-hour shifts, usually take a significant amount of coffee at once. And high concentrations of caffeine are known to only increase the desire to sleep. 29 people participated in the trial conducted by American researchers. For a month they were put under conditions that didn't allow time orientation. During the experiment volunteers spent 29 hours continuously without sleep; part of them were given caffeine pills during this time and the other part received a placebo.

The people who were given a small amount of caffeine every hour had better results at reaction and attention tests compared to the control group, but felt more tired afterwards.
